Vegetarian Brown Gravy
INGREDIENTS:
* 1 teaspoon yeast extract spread, e.g. Marmite/Vegemite
* 1 teaspoon onion powder
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 1 1/2 cups hot water
* 4 tablespoons butter
* 1/2 cup cold water
* 2 tablespoons cornstarch
* one vegetable bouillon cube
DIRECTIONS:
1. Melt butter and bouillon in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in yeast extract spread, onion powder, and salt until smooth. Gradually whisk in 1 1/2 cups water so no lumps form. Bring to a boil. In a small cup, stir together 1/2 cup cold water and cornstarch. Stir the cornstarch mixture into the saucepan, and continue boiling until thickened. Cool slightly before serving.

Is it good? I love marmite, but I'd be afraid it would have too much of that yeasty flavor, KWIM? I might have to try a test batch before Thanksgiving!
Mushrooms lend really good flavor to a gravy, too, especially something earthy like shitakes.
I haven't made it yet. I love mushrooms and think they flavor things SO nicely, but my dh hates them with the passion.
If you make it let me know how it goes. I have never had marmite before, I don't even know where to find it at the store. :)
I found Marmite at Cost Plus World Market. If you have one in your area, see if they have Hi Chew in the candy section. It's our favorite Japanese candy!
Did you try it? How was it? I didn't end up cooking at all for Thanksgiving, so I didn't get to test this recipe.
How was your homemade tofurkey?
The gravy was very good actually. I was very happy with the outcome of it! A little goes a long way too, so it's very cheap!
I wasn't too fond of the tofu turkey, it looked like it, but didn't taste like it. It had great reviews, so I was a little disappointed.
The best tofu I have eaten was at P.F Changs. It was their vegetarian lettuce wraps. Have you ever eaten those? OMGosh, those were to die for! I haven't had tofu that good since then, but I have only tried it in total, about 4 times. I am not giving up yet, but it appears the only way I like it is fried. : )
